Help for Depression: WhatWorks (& what doesn't) is a consumer guide to depression outlining evidence-based reviews for a range of medical, psychological, lifestyle and alternative treatments.
WhatWorks describes the symptoms, causes and treatments of depression and how to find professional help. It comprises a review of 44 medical, psychological and alternative treatments for depression. For each treatment the guide answers the questions What is it?, How is it supposed to work?, Is it effective?, Are there any disadvantages? and Where do you get it? The guide also provides an overall rating of the helpfulness of the treatment based on scientific evidence.
The guide can be purchased from: PANDANAS Books, T. +61 2 6125 3269 F. +61 2 6125 9975 (Catalogue search words: help for depression).
In 2003 the Centre has published the results of its large randomised controlled trial which show that participants who receive the consumer guide (rather than other forms of depression information) are more likely to take action (primarily self-help action based on the information in the guide), more likely to offer advice to others on depression related issues, and had changed opinions of the effectiveness of particular treatments based on the evidence-based approach taken throughout the consumer guide.
The information in WhatWorks can also be accessed through the Centre's BluePages depression information website.
