Alcuin College was formally opened in October 1969 by the Rt. Hon. Lord Clark CH, Chancellor of the University at that time, the third of the eight colleges at the University. The other Colleges are Derwent, Langwith, Vanbrugh, Goodricke, James, Wentworth and Halifax College. The College has 542 study bedrooms housing mainly undergraduates but with a few postgraduate students, together with a café-bar, Junior (JCR), Graduate (GCR) and Senior (SCR) Common Rooms, a Laundry, Reception, and staff offices. The College is also the home of a number of academic departments including the Department of Economics and Related Studies, the Centre for Defence Economics, the Centre for Health Economics (CHE), the Department of Health Sciences, the Centre for Science Education and the Social Policy and Social Work Department.
The College is headed by the Provost who has ultimate responsibility for the character, discipline, well-being and development of the College community and for co-ordinating and representing the views and interests of its members, assisted by the Deputy Provost, the College Administrator and a resident College Dean. The Provost is also assisted by three resident postgraduate tutors. A College Committee meets each term to discuss matters of interest and concern to the College, with representation from the College Staff, the Junior Common Room (JCR), the Graduate Common Room (GCR), and the Senior Common Room (SCR). Each of the Common Rooms has its own committee, which run their own affairs and organise a number of social and cultural events during the year.
